In lieu of wpwend’s normal annual holiday episode talking about a specific retro console, the host of retro gaming podcast Giraffe Feels spends this one with the story of how his mom got into video games via the Nintendo Wii and Animal Crossing City Folk. This is the second episode in the show’s feed dedicated expressly to stories of his mother’s gaming habits (she passed away in March). The host’s bemusement at a) his mother’s interest in the Wii/video games when she’d shown zero previously, and b) subsequent obsession with the Animal Crossing series is something I think a lot of players can identify with if they’ve had a non-gaming friend or family member suddenly express interest in the hobby.
Should this episode catch your attention, the 80-or-so episodes in Giraffe Feels’ feed may also be up your alley. It is ostensibly a retro video games podcast, but the solo host frames each episode’s game with his personal experiences and the things happening in his life at the time he was originally playing it. The show is simultaneously a retrospective on the games and the host’s life—told in a very conversational style that makes it a captivating listen.
