Bits N’ Bricks is a fantastic new and officially sanctioned podcast chronicling 25 years of LEGO video games—and to say that this podcast goes to some fascinating places right off the bat is an understatement. In their first episode, hosts Brian Crecente and Ethan Vincent uncover the details behind a pretty big secret project between The LEGO Group and Minecraft creators Mojang—an actual, licensed, LEGO Minecraft game. The two hosts interview staff from both LEGO and Mojang, shedding a surprisingly candid amount of light on this project (which was also known as “Rex Kwon Do”) and the hurdles it faced until Minecraft creator Notch ultimately canceled the game in 2012.
While I’m highlighting the first episode here, there’ve been an additional four episodes since the show’s start in December, covering a range of topics from LEGO’s first forays into the digital space, LEGO Super Mario, and the Unity LEGO Microgame creation system. The series will eventually total 10 episodes (plus an unnumbered Holiday Special) and there’s an upcoming episode all about the TT Games titles, which I’m really looking forward to.
