Maximum Power Up Talks With IGN VP John Davison About His Gaming Magazine Past

January 19, 2021 by Chris Johnston

UK-based retro/modern gaming podcast Maximum Power Up has been on a roll recently of interviewing former editors and writers from various UK games magazines. In the latest episode, host Paul Monaghan interviews IGN Publisher John Davison, whose credits include Games-X, Megadrive Advanced Gaming, and PC Zone. US listeners will recognize him from magazines like Electronic Gaming Monthly, The Official US PlayStation Magazine, GamePro, and as a co-host on the 1UP Yours podcast.

It’s a great look back at Davison’s career—and as a side note, he was Editor-in-Chief at EGM when I worked there, so this was a fun trip down memory lane for me as well.

Once you’re done with this one, it’s worth going through Maximum Power Up’s back-catalog of episodes for interviews with Gary Whitta, Tim Weaver, Chris Scullion, and Paul McNally, and others. While I hail from the US, I did pick up the occasional import UK mag back in the day, and it is super interesting to hear more about the editorial industry there from the 80s/90s.
