In the latest episode of Retro Game Time Machine, hosts MashTheNewton and AndyTheAndroid travel back to take a look at PaRappa the Rapper, discussing the history and gameplay of this pivotal, genre-defining PlayStation title. Back in 1997, it felt like it took forever for PaRappa the Rapper to get released in the US—but as I was reminded while listening to this episode of RGTM, it was only a year. Not even a full 365 days. That’s pretty darn good, especially for the time! In hindsight, we were kinda lucky this game came out here at all.
RGTM’s format is conversational and fun, and despite the show’s name they do chat about current titles too. The discussion of each episode’s retro game is bookended by going over current game news and what the hosts are currently playing—a mix of modern and retro. In the middle, the two hosts hop into a virtual time machine and go back in time talk about the episode’s main game. Not only do they discuss the game at hand, but they take a moment at the start to talk about some of the things happening in pop culture at the time it released too, making it extra nostalgic for the listener.
They’re 14 episodes in but have already covered a lot of great releases, with episodes centered on Doom, Gunstar Heroes, Mario Kart and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, to name but a few.
