If anything, 2020 has helped prove that video games can have a positive impact on a player’s mental health—to an extent I’m sure we all used games to escape into during this pandemic. Digital Doc Games, doctor Amiad Fredman’s podcast and YouTube channel, explores the impact that games can have on all sorts of health-related topics.
One episode in particular that caught my eye was his interview with the developers of Before I Forget, a game where you play a character with early onset dementia. Hearing about the making of the game and how the developers used gameplay mechanics and narrative to bring the player into the shoes of the lead character is fascinating stuff (and led me to purchase the game on Steam!).
The Digital Doc Games podcast and YouTube channel are relatively new but already contain a wealth of great information and insightful interviews with healthcare professionals and game developers alike—worth exploring for players looking to better their understanding of the connection between games and health/accessibility.
