Metroid Prime is a beloved series now (with many eagerly awaiting the fourth installment), but while it was in development there was a lot of skepticism surrounding it. Would it feel like Metroid? Would it just be another first-person shooter? How do you translate a beloved series like Metroid into 3D successfully with all its little mechanical touches?
Game club podcast Old Game Plus recently finished a series of episodes covering Metroid Prime. And in a new bonus episode they interview engineer and designer Zoid Kirsch about the development of that game and the many design challenges the team faced during its production. It’s a fascinating and—considering it’s a first-party Nintendo game—very rare look behind the curtain that should not be missed.
