We all know that Sonic the Hedgehog struggled much more than the Mario franchise in the transition from 2D to 3D. From a gameplay perspective, many of the early Sonic 3D entries just didn’t feel right. But I don’t think I’ve seen it articulated as well as I have in the newest episode of New Frame Plus, where Daniel Floyd runs down mainline console Sonic games and critiques their animation and impact on game feel. The insights here are fantastic and left me wanting to hear Dan’s take on Balan Wonderworld, a game which most definitely suffers from so many of the flaws of early 3D Sonic animation.
New Frame Plus is a great channel to stay subscribed to with a back-catalog on both good and bad game animation.
